Regular Check-Ups Are Important

Veterinary listening to dog's heart

Regular wellness exams are important for all pets, even parrots that can talk to us. Most animals will instinctively hide any signs of weakness or illness. As pet owners and caretakers, we need to be proactive.

We recommend annual wellness visits for most animals. Elderly pets or those suffering from certain chronic conditions may require more frequent visits. Our number one priority is to make sure your pet lives a long, healthy life.

At your pet’s wellness exam, one of our caring doctors will address any questions or concerns you might have, perform a physical examination and evaluation, and administer appropriate vaccines. Suggested tests might include a blood panel, urinalysis, or fecal sample to spot any underlying signs of illness or disease.

Our experienced team can also provide any counseling regarding nutrition, behavior problems, allergies, senior pet health, or any other special concerns you might have regarding your pet.

If a problem is uncovered during your pet’s wellness visit, we will diagnose it promptly and suggest a plan for treatment.

We adhere to AAHA guidelines for cat and dog vaccinations, but we will individualize our recommendations based on your pet’s lifestyle. If you’ve got a puppy who loves to swim, for instance, we might recommend the Lepto vaccine to protect your dog from bacteria commonly carried by raccoons and possums that spreads easily through soil and water.

For the added safety and security of pets in hurricane-prone areas like Florida’s Gulf Coast, we strongly recommend microchipping. The process causes no more discomfort than a vaccine and involves injecting a microchip containing a unique identification number under your pet’s skin. Veterinary hospitals and animal shelters will scan animals that arrive on their doorsteps for microchips. Your contact information is linked to the animal’s unique ID number and can be updated anytime, should your address or phone number change. Any animals—cats, dogs, birds, horses, snakes, and reptiles—can and should be microchipped. It is the one, sure-fire way of linking your pet to your family, should you and your pet become separated.
